چکیده

The southern hemisphere westerly winds have been strengthening and shifting poleward since the 1950s. This wind trend is projected to persist under continued anthropogenic forcing, but the impact of the changing winds on Antarctic coastal heat distribution remains poorly understood. Here we show that a poleward wind shift at the latitudes of the Antarctic Peninsula can produce an intense warming of subsurface coastal waters that exceeds 2°C at 200–700m depth. The model simulated warming results from a rapid advective heat flux induced by weakened near-shore Ekman pumping and is associated with weakened coastal currents. This analysis shows that anthropogenically induced wind changes can dramatically increase the temperature of ocean water at ice sheet grounding lines and at the base of floating ice shelves around Antarctica, with potentially significant ramifications for global sea level rise.

Southern Hemisphere Atmospheric Circulation Response to Global Warming

The response of the Southern Hemisphere (SH), extratropical, atmospheric general circulation to transient, anthropogenic, greenhouse warming is investigated in a coupled climate model. The extratropical circulation response consists of a SH summer half-year poleward shift of the westerly jet and a year-round positive wind anomaly in the stratosphere and the tropical upper troposphere. Along wit...

On the multi-century Southern Hemisphere response to changes in atmospheric CO2-concentration in a Global Climate Model

The transient response of the Southern Hemisphere to climate change is examined using an intermediate complexity climate model. Unlike previous studies, the Southern Ocean response on the centennial to multi-centennial timescale is assessed in some detail. It is shown that changes in atmospheric CO2-concentrations lead to an increase in the strength of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) by...

Circulation Response to Climate Forcing: Uniform SST Warming

7 The mechanisms of the atmospheric response to climate forcing are analyzed using an ex8 ample of uniform SST warming in an idealized aqua-planet model. A 200-member ensemble 9 of experiments is conducted with an instantaneous uniform SST warming. The zonal mean 10 circulation changes display a rapid poleward shift in the midlatitude eddy-driven westerlies 11 and the edge of the Hadley cell ci...

Climate Change and Trophic Response of the Antarctic Bottom Fauna

BACKGROUND As Earth warms, temperate and subpolar marine species will increasingly shift their geographic ranges poleward. The endemic shelf fauna of Antarctica is especially vulnerable to climate-mediated biological invasions because cold temperatures currently exclude the durophagous (shell-breaking) predators that structure shallow-benthic communities elsewhere. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDI...

Distribution of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water on the warming continental shelf of the West Antarctic Peninsula

We use autonomous underwater vehicles to characterize the spatial distribution of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW) on the continental shelf of the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) and present the first near-synoptic measurements of mesoscale features (eddies) containing UCDW on the WAP. Thirty-three subsurface eddies with widths on the order of 10 km were detected during four glider deployment...
